Welcome to Funky Vintage, my name is Kelley. I live in the most beautiful place in Central Scotland called Bridge of Allan. We have hills and woods on our doorstep plus a great community of people who also love it here.
Where did Funky Vintage come from…?
For as long as I can remember I have been fascinated with all things retro. Colours, shapes and patterns intrigue me. From a young age I found myself experimenting with shapes and colour creating new bold patterns.
When searching for furniture for my 60s home, I discovered my incredible passion for Mid Century Modern furniture, also known as MCM furniture. Naturally as I got more experienced with the skills involved in up cycling, I started to use the designs I had created on furniture.
I have lots of Mid Century furniture in my own home. I am slightly addicted to buying it!! I adore the clean lines and beautiful wood typically found in these pieces.
When I moved into my current 60s house I decided to buy some mid century furniture. My first piece was a high G Plan Fresco Sideboard, a thing of beauty! I learnt a lot fast on this project – upcycling is not for the faint hearted! It takes patience, problem solving and vision. After two days sanding by hand along with my sister in law (we didn’t have a world class sander then!), the messy, physical task of stripping varnish off had not deterred me! Infact I enjoyed seeing the varnish coming off and the wood grain coming alive. Although I really wanted to keep this piece, I decided to see if I could make a business out of this. So I enlisted it and it sold! Then I thought, let me do that again!
The rest is history!
Some of my greatest achievements –
- I was shortlisted for the industry Flip Runway Awards 2021 for best Creative Upcycle. I cannot express how happy this made me feel! I’d only been upcycling for one year and I was being recognised amongst the industry heros!
- I am a monthly Columnist for Restore Magazine, the first UK Upcycling magazine.
